DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY

COURSE OFFERED

Study of Surgery starts in 2rd phase with lectures, tutorials and ward placement. In the 3rd phase, students are placed in Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology department each for 4 weeks. In 4th phase students are again placed in general surgery, Orthopaedics and other sub-specialties. Total teaching hour includes 500 hours of lecture, 200 hours of tutorials and 20 hours of integrated teaching. Ward placement includes 16 weeks in 2nd phase, 12 weeks in 3rd phase and 16 weeks in 4th phase. Besides 8 weeks are allocated for block posting.

DEPARTMENTAL OBJECTIVES

General objectives:

The aim of this course is to provide community oriented and need based education so as to produce basic doctors who can meet the demands of the country.

Specific objectives:

At the end of the course, the student should be able to -

 Complete clinical evaluation of patients of common surgical problems prevalent in Bangladesh

 Carry out necessary investigations and interpret the results

 Perform minor surgical procedures and treat minor surgical problems

 Recognize the major surgical problems needing specialized care, initiate primary treatment and refer to appropriate centers

 Diagnose and provide competent primary care in surgical emergencies

 Carry out the responsibility of management in common casualties and natural calamities or man made disasters to offer and arrange basic life support

Demonstrate the right attitude in

 Patient care

 Community health care

 Continuing medical education and research

 Observing the moral and legal codes of medical ethics
